around the farm, weeks 29-34

Time to try and catch up with what's been happening around the place!  Here are a bunch of pictures in no particular order:

True Blue Potatoes

I need to dig up the last four row of potatoes, and the rest of the volunteers next to the lettuce patch, and then I'll have all suds harvested for the year.  I should have enough to see my customers through the rest of the season getting potatoes in their boxes weekly.

My hens won't stop with the broodiness, and I've given up fighting them.  After all, what's a few more chicks, and they are sure happy being moms.  These hatched a few weeks ago and are doing great!

Butterscotch Orange Pudding McCloud

That's one long name for a kitten!  We had a hard time coming up with a name everyone agreed on, until in a fit of weary silliness we all decided this name was good enough!  

Where did this kitten come from?  Little J's friend's cat had a batch and we couldn't resist. Since we want her to live to a ripe old age and not disappear like Totoro did in June, we've decided she'll be an indoor only kitty.  

the pigeons are back!

Every year we get pigeons who migrate through just when the Cascara berries are ripe.  I love hearing their heavy fluttering and seeing them come an go in droves.

Do you think our lawn will grow in time for our Labor Day picnic?

We decided to invest in a tractor to help with the place, and the farm business.  Right here where the tractor is parked, you can see the beginnings of an earthen green house, or Walipini.

A.'s a teen now

We celebrated A's birthday on Monday, but with him counting down since June, the event felt longer than the actual day.  Per his request, we stayed home and had a quiet family party with brownies instead of cake, and space themed decorations to celebrate.

Zimmerman?  Zimmerman.

Below is the yearly interview:

How does it feel to be a teenager now?
Not different, really.

What did you like about your birthday?
I liked all the decorations and also that I got a lot of presents that I wasn't expecting to get that I loved.

What didn't you like?
I didn't like spending 8 hours trying to get one of my presents to work.

Any memorable experiences this last year?
Mostly just hiking Mt. St. Helens.  That's my most memorable one.  Also hiking to Ice Lake, the trip to Yellowstone, and wood shop class.

Any words of wisdom you can share?

  • Don't drink a gallon of soda before bedtime (I've not done this cause I'm smart).  
  • The day after your birthday can be better than the actual day cause that's when you get to play with all your presents.
  • Don't use sprite instead of milk for your cereal.  
  • Never lick beach sand, no matter what.

around the farm week 27, 28

We dug up a volunteer potato plant that was shading out my lettuce.  Lots of red potatoes came off the bush, including this beast.  It got named George and sat on the table for a good week being admired.  Hunger won out Sunday morning and hash browns were had.

Due to my inability to keep my ladies out of my gardens and wrecking havoc, with a heavy heart I've had to keep them locked up this summer.  In order to keep them healthy and happy, I give them armloads of fresh greens every day. My daily goal is to give them more than they can eat. I love that they spend the afternoons usually stuffed to the beaks and snoozing on that day's leftovers.  It has also changed my perspective on weeds - I now see this as free chicken food, which is very exciting.

Ducks staying cool in the heat.  We emptied their pond, scooped out the sludge at the bottom and refilled after cleaning it.  They appreciate it but still like sitting in their drinking water.

roasted Joi Choi/Chinese cabbage

The warm weather has really sped my garden along, and we have been enjoying Chinese cabbage for a while now, and Joi Choi has come along earlier than anticipated.  We've been trying out new recipes to use up all the wonderful greens and have recently tried roasting them like we would broccoli.  I wasn't sure how it would turn out - but it's really yummy and even better is that all four of us like it.

Can you believe that the entire cabbage fit on a regular plate once roasted?!?

You can make this with any Chinese cabbage, Bok/Joi Choi, or a combination of these

3 cups chopped cabbage or Joi Choi, or both
3 TBSP olive oil
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3/4 tsp. dried rosemary
salt and pepper, to taste

1) Preheat oven to 450 F.
2) Toss all ingredients together and put on a baking sheets.
3) Bake about 15 minutes or until the tops start browning.  You'll have some crisp pieces, and some juicy pieces.
